Ricardo de Vicq was born in 1950, Rio de Janeiro. In the 60's he studied painting and drawing with the artist and master, Ivan Serpa at the MAM - Museu de Arte Moderna (Museum of Modern Art). He began his career in photography in the 70's taking portraits of artist for their record sleeves, some of them icons of Bossa Nova.
Working from São Paulo since the 80's where he established his own studio, he's been one of he greatest names in culinary photography in Brazil. He works with publicity agencies, design and magazine editorials. He has also photographed culinary book for various chefs, among them, "O Sabor das Estações" (Season's Flavours) by Laurent Suaudeau.
His main focus points too food, drink and still life. The liquid, the colour and texture have always charmed and inspired Ricardo to capture in a photograph, the taste and aroma of the food.
In publicity, his work has received Cannes Festival Awards, Conrad Wessel, NY. Festival, London Advertising Awards, Clio Awards, The Art Directors Club, Graphis Advertising, Graphis Alternative Photography and Avon Colours, among others.
His private work in Fine-Art has been shown in both collective exhibitions and individual, nationally and internationally: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paris, Florence, Pistoia, Los Angeles, Vermont, Fort Collins, Greenville, Dayton and Berlin.
In October, 2016 he took part in the collective exposition "Berlin Foto Biennale". He has had his work in exposition at Treviso, at the "Biennale D'Arte Di Asolo" in 2014. In 1994, he had the honour of being awarded the front cover of the annual "Graphis Photo Annual", from the respected Graphis Editor established in New York.
The relationship between Ricardo and photography goes beyond the professional, it is through photography that he establishes a link with the world. It is in his photographic production that his feelings, thoughts, questions, ideas and stories leap from the imagination to become reality. Ricardo photographs for pleasure.
His work does reveal itself immediately to the public. It is expressed through metaphor inserted between the lines of every image in infinite nuance. A visual construction, that permits each spectator to make their own connections to their private universe and life experience.
"To photograph is to reveal a melody that composes itself through two silent instruments: the camera and the eye. An intuitive act; when I let myself be guided by emotion. An intention is born, an idea, a concept that dictates which path I should take. This is what I look for, be it in a landscape, a person or in an object. All of them, in their own way, carry feeling. In doing this I feel that I am in some way in sync with my own time.”
1950 - Ricardo de Vicq de Cumptich was born on the 13th of September in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Mid 60’s - Ricardo learnt to draw and paint with the artist and master Ivan Serpa at the MAM RJ – Modern Art Museum, Rio de Janeiro.
1968 - He was an intern at Studio JB: a Brazilian newspaper (Jornal do Brasil), Rio de Janeiro.
1970/72 - He worked as a photographer at Foco: an advertising agency and photography business in Rio de Janeiro.
1972 - He taught photography at Foco, Rio de Janeiro.
1972/79 - He opened his own studio in Rio de Janeiro and started working with record labels (Philips, Odeon, Elenco , Ariola), advertising agencies and editorial market. He shot photos to be used as record covers for artists such as Nara Leão, Tim Maia, Dona Ivone Lara, Jorge Benjor, MPB-4, Alceu Valença, João Carlos Martins, Quarteto em Cy, Luiz Gonzaga Jr, Genival Lacerda, Ivan Lins and more.
1979/85 - He formed a partnership with the Casa da Foto Studio in Rio de Janeiro, with Luiz Garrido, Levindo Carneiro and Paulo Pinho.
1985/2016 - He moved to São Paulo where he opened a new photo studio, working for advertising, design and editorial. Since then, he has been developing also his authorial and conceptual photographic work.
1998/2002 - He taught at ESPM; Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (Superior School of Marketing and Advertising) – Light painting and Food Photography, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.
